We build both, so we have no reason to oversell either. Here is the honest comparison we give our own customers.
Every solid oak panel is made from staves glued edge to edge. The question is what happens in the thickness. A full stave (single-thickness) panel uses staves as thick as the finished panel — a 40 mm top is one layer of 40 mm oak. A two-layer panel builds the same 40 mm from two 20 mm layers glued face to face through the full width.
Wood never stops moving with humidity. In a single thick stave, the growth-ring geometry pulls the piece toward cupping as moisture cycles. In a two-layer build, the layers are arranged so their movement tendencies oppose each other — the panel stays flatter over a wide surface, year after year. That is why our 40 mm treads and worktops are two-layer as standard: on a stair or a kitchen run, flatness is the property you actually live with.
The edge. A two-layer panel shows a glue line at half thickness on any exposed edge — invisible on an installed tread with a nosing, visible on a freestanding table with a chamfered edge. Premium furniture buyers in Scandinavia and Germany often specify "durchgehende Lamellen" / helstav for exactly this reason. If the edge is on show and the look matters more than the last word in flatness, full stave is the right call — and we build it from appropriately thick stock, never by pretending a laminated edge away.
The one thing we insist on: declaring the construction in every quote. A surprising amount of the market doesn't. If a price for "solid oak" looks too good, ask what's in the thickness.
